How fire-rated glass works
The glazing in a fire door is fire-rated glass rather than ordinary glass, held with intumescent seals that expand in heat to keep the panel in its frame, so it resists fire and smoke for as long as the door around it. That protection comes in two levels: thirty minutes in our FD30 fire doors, which covers most homes, and sixty in our FD60 fire doors for higher-risk buildings. The rating holds only while the door keeps its certified glass, seals and construction intact.
When a solid door suits better
A vision panel is not right for every opening, and some rooms simply do not need the glass. Where that is the case, our wider internal fire doors range covers solid doors in flush, panelled and period styles with the same certified protection. The glazed doors here are for the openings where light matters as much as safety.
Fitting and keeping the rating
A fire door only performs as a complete assembly, so the frame and hardware matter as much as the door. Hang it in a fire-rated frame or lining fitted with the correct intumescent seals, and use fire-rated hinges and a closer so the door swings shut and seals properly in a fire. Following the manufacturer's fitting instructions is what keeps the door's certification valid.
