Glazed External Doors, Full of Natural Light

Glazed external doors bring daylight into an entrance without giving up the warmth and security of real timber. Ours run from a single-light half-glazed door, with glass over the top half and a solid lower panel, to a fully glazed design that is mostly glass. That range lets you light a dark hallway, frame a garden view, or add a period detail to a traditional home, all in real oak or hard-wearing hardwood. Every door is supplied pre-glazed and ready to finish, so it arrives as one weathertight unit. They sit within our external doors by type range, and form the outdoor part of our wider glazed doors collection.

Choose Your Glass

The glass is the choice that shapes the look. Clear glazing, as on the Newbury, Suffolk and Goodwood, gives the most light and an open view. Frosted or obscure glass, as on the Harrow and Balham, keeps the daylight but adds privacy, which suits a door onto the street. Leaded designs like the Estate Crown, Derby and Cottage bring period detail to a traditional home. Every door is supplied pre-glazed with toughened safety glass, most in double-glazed sealed units, so you keep the warmth and security along with the light. Not sure how much glass you want? Our guide to fully glazed vs half glazed external doors walks through the options. And if you want a fully glazed pair rather than a single door, our external French doors take the look further.

Oak or Hardwood

The other choice is the timber itself. Our oak external doors have a warm, characterful grain that sets off the glazing on a period or cottage entrance. Our hardwood external doors are a dense, hard-wearing alternative that takes the weather just as well, at a friendlier price. Both arrive unfinished, so you seal them yourself: oak takes a clear exterior oil that lifts the grain, while hardwood can be oiled or painted to suit. Sealed and looked after, either is built to last for years outdoors.

Where a Glazed Door Works

A glazed door earns its place anywhere a room could use more light. As one of our external front doors it brightens a hallway and lets you see who is at the door. As one of our back doors it opens a kitchen or utility onto the garden. A glazed stable door goes further still, letting you open the top half for light and fresh air while the bottom stays shut. Where privacy matters most, a frosted or half-glazed door keeps the light without the view.

Finishing and Fitting

A glazed door is hung and finished like any external timber door, with a little extra care around the glass. Hang it in a sound external door frame with a weathered cill, and fit secure multi-point or mortice locking and handles to the finished doorset. Protect the timber with a good exterior wood treatment on every face and edge. Keep the glazing seals and drainage clear so water runs off rather than sitting against the frame. Refresh the finish every year or two and the whole opening will stay weathertight.

FAQs

Yes. Our glazed external doors are supplied pre-glazed with toughened safety glass, most in double-glazed sealed units, ready to finish and fit.

Yes. Alongside clear glazing we offer frosted and obscure glass for privacy, and leaded designs for a period look, so you can light an entrance without being overlooked.

A half-glazed door has glass over part of its height with a solid lower section, while a fully glazed door is glazed over most of the door for maximum light. Our guide to external doors with glass explains which suits which opening.

The glass is toughened and set in sealed double-glazed units. Our doors are supplied as unfinished leaves, so fit proper multipoint locking to the finished doorset for full security.
