When Thirty Minutes Isn't Enough

An FD60 fire door is built and tested to hold back fire for a full 60 minutes, twice as long as the more common FD30. That extra half hour is specified where a building is larger, taller or busier, and where the people inside need more time to get out or the structure needs longer to stay protected. It's the door you reach for when a fire strategy or building control asks for 60 minutes rather than 30.

Where FD60 fire doors are specified

FD60 doors are the standard in commercial and higher-risk settings: office blocks, hotels, care homes, and the shared stairwells and corridors of larger apartment buildings, where a longer period of protection buys time for a full evacuation. If you're specifying for a project like this, always work to the building's fire strategy or a professional fire risk assessment, which will set both the rating and any extra requirements for each opening.

One case to watch is the front door of an individual flat. These are often required to be certified doorsets rather than a door on its own, usually combining a fire rating with smoke seals (an FD30S or FD60S specification) and sometimes PAS 24 security certification. Those are a separate, third-party-certified product, so if that is what your building needs, check the specification carefully rather than assuming a standard fire door will meet it.

Styles and finishes

Because they lean commercial, FD60 doors are most often clean flush designs. You'll find them here in warm oak fire doors and walnut veneer, crisp paint-ready white fire doors for a contract finish, and lighter ash, with panelled options where a design calls for them.

Fitting and keeping the rating

Like any fire door, an FD60 only performs as part of a complete doorset, so it needs a compatible fire door frame or lining rated to match, intumescent strips and smoke seals, and heavy-duty fire-rated hinges able to carry the extra weight, with a closer where one is required. Because these doors are heavier, the frame and hinges matter even more.
