Matching the Door to the Opening and the Risk

Two things decide which fire door an opening needs: the size that fits the frame, and the rating the building calls for. This page brings both together, so you can match the width to your doorway and the level of protection to the room. Choosing the rating

Most homes need thirty minutes of protection, our FD30 fire doors, which cover loft conversions, integral garages and doors onto a stairwell. Higher-risk buildings, such as commercial premises and shared blocks, often call for sixty minutes, our FD60 fire doors. Building control or a fire risk assessment will confirm which your opening needs.

Choosing the width

The size quoted is the door leaf width, not the opening, so measure carefully and allow for the frame. 762mm (30 inch) is the standard UK width and fits most doorways, with 686mm (27 inch) for tighter openings and 610mm (24 inch) for cloakrooms and cupboards. For wider openings, 813mm (32 inch) and 838mm (33 inch) give more generous, easier access. Fire doors can only be trimmed by the small amount their certification allows, so buy the nearest size up rather than forcing an undersized door to fit.
