The Hinges That Keep a Fire Door Working

A fire door is only as good as the ironmongery holding it up. Fire-rated hinges are tested to carry the extra weight of a solid fire door and to keep it swinging true and closing properly, so the door sits tight against its seals when it matters. Ordinary hinges are not a substitute: a fire door should be hung on CE-marked fire door hinges, usually three per leaf.

What makes a hinge fire-rated

Fire door hinges are tested and CE-marked to suit the door's rating, made from steel or another high-melting-point metal so they hold their shape in a fire. Intumescent hinge pads are fitted behind some hinges to protect the housing.
