The Seals That Close the Gap in a Fire

Every fire door needs a way to seal the gap around its edge when a fire takes hold, and that job falls to the strips and seals fitted into the door or frame. Intumescent strips sit in a groove around the door edge and swell in the heat, closing the gap so flames and hot gases cannot pass. Smoke seals, often a brush or fin, block cold smoke at everyday temperatures, which is what protects an escape route early in a fire.

They are part of what turns a door into a working fire doorset, alongside fire-rated hinges and other fire door accessories, and they fit the full range of internal fire doors.

Intumescent strips, smoke seals and combined

There are three common types. Plain intumescent strips handle fire only. Combined strips add a brush or fin seal to the same fitting, so one product does both fire and smoke, and these are what most modern fire doors use. Separate smoke seals and threshold or drop-down seals cover specific gaps at the bottom of the door. Match the strip size and rating to the door.

Getting the fit right

Strips and seals only work if they match the door and are fitted correctly, usually into a groove in the door edge or frame, unbroken all the way round. They pair with the FD30 or FD60 door and its fire-rated frame or lining. Follow the door's certification for the strip type and size it needs.
