A Wider Door for Larger Openings and Easier Access

838mm, or 33 inches, is the widest of the common internal door sizes, and the one to reach for when a doorway is larger than standard or needs a bit more clear width to move through. An 838mm fire door suits wide hallways, through-rooms and openings where easier access matters, giving you that extra width with a tested fire-resisting core.

It is the wide end of our fire door sizes range, a step up from the standard 762mm width, and part of the wider internal fire doors collection.

When an 838mm door is the right call

Reach for 838mm when the opening is genuinely wider than standard, or where a little more clear width helps, for example a main through-route or a room that needs easier access. Measure the leaf against the opening, allowing for the frame or lining, and remember a fire door can only be trimmed by the small amount its certification allows, so size up rather than force a narrow door to span a wide gap.

Styles, finishes and rating

The wider size still comes across the range, so you can have 838mm in glazed, panelled and flush styles and finishes like oak. Most are fitted at a 30-minute rating, our FD30 fire doors, and an 838mm door only performs as a complete doorset with a fire-rated frame, intumescent seals and fire-rated hinges.

FAQs

838mm is 33 inches, the widest of the common UK internal door widths. It is used where an opening is larger than standard or needs a little more clear width.

Choose it for wider openings, main through-routes, or rooms where easier access matters. If your opening is standard, 762mm is usually the better fit.

It is fitted the same way as any fire door, into a fire-rated frame or lining with intumescent seals and fire-rated hinges, but heavier leaves may need a third or fourth hinge. Follow the door's certification.

Most are FD30 for 30 minutes of protection, with some FD60. Building control or a fire risk assessment will confirm the rating your opening needs.
