Oak or Hardwood?

Every french door here is real timber, in a choice of two woods. Our oak external doors give a premium, warm-toned finish that suits a period or character home. Our hardwood external doors offer the same weatherproof build and light-filled look at a friendlier price. Both are made to be sealed and to last for years outdoors, so the choice is mostly about the look you want and what you would like to spend.

Light, Privacy and Security

A glazed door earns its place at the back of a house by turning a dark room bright. The trade-off is privacy and security, and both are easily handled. Toughened or double-glazed units give the glass real strength and keep the heat in, and frosted glass hides the view where you want it. Finishing and Fitting

Like any external timber door, a french door is supplied unfinished and needs sealing before use. Oak takes a clear exterior wood oil that protects it and shows the grain, while hardwood can be oiled or, if you want a colour, stained or painted. Seal every face and edge, and keep the glazing seals and drainage clear so water runs off rather than sitting against the frame. To hang it, add a matching external door frame with a weathered cill.
