A Narrower Width for Tighter Openings

686mm, or 27 inches, is a common narrower internal width, the size to look at when a doorway is a little tighter than standard, as it often is in older houses, smaller rooms and secondary openings. A 686mm fire door gives you that slimmer fit without giving up on the tested fire-resisting core.

It sits just below the standard 762mm width in our fire door sizes range, with the narrower 610mm size below it, all part of the wider internal fire doors collection.

Where a 686mm door fits

686mm suits smaller bedrooms, box rooms, older properties with non-standard openings and secondary doors where a full 762mm leaf would not fit. Measure the leaf against the opening, allowing for the frame or lining, and buy the nearest size rather than trimming a fire door beyond the small amount its certification allows.

Styles, finishes and rating

The narrower size still comes across the range, in finishes like white and oak and in flush, panelled and glazed styles. Most are fitted at a 30-minute rating, our FD30 fire doors, and only perform as a complete doorset with a fire-rated frame, intumescent seals and fire-rated hinges.

FAQs

686mm is 27 inches, a common narrower internal door width. It suits tighter openings that will not take a standard 762mm door.

In older houses with non-standard openings, smaller bedrooms and box rooms, or secondary doors where a full-width leaf would not fit.

No. Fire doors can only be trimmed by a few millimetres before the certification is void, so you cannot take a 762mm door down to 686mm. Buy the 686mm size instead.

Most are FD30 for 30 minutes of protection, with some FD60. Building control or a fire risk assessment will confirm the rating your opening needs.
