Our Favourite (Halloweeny) Crafts: October 2014

It’s no secret; upcycling, crafting and DIY have taken the internet by storm. No matter what it is you want to make, do a quick search and you’ll find a tutorial on how to create it. So, with all of these amazing projects floating around the web, we decided it’s time to do a roundup of the best projects over the last month! With Halloween just around the corner, what better introduction to this series of posts is there than with a dedication to the spookiest night of the year? We’ve had a look through some super creative and great looking Halloween decorations from the past month and put them together for you! Don’t be fooled, these creations look great but are simple and relatively cheap to make! So, without further ado and in no particular order, let’s take a look at some of our top picks!

DIY Halloween Themed Apothecary Jars/Potion Bottles

These decorations are incredibly easy to make but so effective! We found two that we really liked and just couldn’t choose between them. This first one comes from Carrie Waller at Dream Green DIY. Carrie lives in Virginia, USA and loves blogging about DIY, design and life. You can find all kinds of projects on her site from holiday decorations and home décor projects to DIY handbags and customisable iPhone cases. These Halloween apothecary jars are super easy to make and look better than any store bought equivalents we’ve ever seen! Simply add water and food colouring to cool looking glasses jars and bottles, add labels and hey presto! We particularly like the ones where the colouring hasn't completely mixed!

Next up are Jamie’s potion bottles from Some of This and That. Jamie lives in North Carolina and discovered a passion for blogging after serving in the army. She writes about all sorts of creative things including delicious recipes, cool costume ideas and inspiring home décor ideas.

Jamie’s potion bottles are a little different from Carrie’s but look just as great! With three different styles you’ll be able to create a whole collection of spooky looking elixirs! It’s hard to choose a favourite out of these three but we love the eerie look of the spider web jar!

Black Crepe Paper Wreath

Who said wreathes are only for Christmas? If there is one thing Pinterest has taught us it’s that there is a wreath for ANY occasion. This creation by Lia from LiaGriffith.com is sophisticated while still creepy and dead looking; perfect for a more grown up Halloween. Coming from a family of artists and DIYers means that Lia has an innate create flair which has seen her projects features in a wide range of blogs and publications. On her blog you’ll find endless tutorials on everything from paper crafts to upcycled furniture. The crepe paper wreath is incredibly simple to make but looks so beautiful and elegant that we had to include it! Just cut out leaf shapes from crepe paper and stick them to a foam wreath and you’ve got a stunning wreath that looks much more expensive than it really is!

Hanging Ghosts

Ashley from Simply Designing is an interior designer whose passion for creating lead her to blogging and sharing her ideas and inspirations. Located in Indianapolis, she has a love of power tools and on her blog you’ll find lots of DIY tutorials on furniture remodelling and creation and super cool upcycles. Ashley was inspired to make her hanging ghosts when she saw the Pottery Barn’s Halloween line and decided she could make her own for a fraction of the cost. These cute ghosts are super easy to make and look just as good as (if not better!) than Pottery Barn’s ghosts.

Spider Garland

We figured this next project would be great inspiration for an easily customisable piece of décor; you could use any colour/theme you want! The spider garland is by Tori of Lil’ Mrs. Tori for the Consumer Crafts blog. Tori writes for Consumer Crafts along with some other popular “crafty” bloggers and also runs her own blog where she features a range of great tutorials on everything from seasonal décor to cool clothing. To create the spider garland, Tori used store bought spiders, burlap, ribbon and cheesecloth. The end results look great and you can easily use different colours and any Halloween theme of your choice!

Concrete Tombstone

We think creating concrete Halloween decorations is pure dedication (and really cool!). If you like the creepier side of Halloween then this one is for you! This fun project was created by Jenise from DIY Fun Ideas. Jenise is a self-confessed concrete-a-holic and she’s still relatively new to the world of blogging, however, you’ll find some great furniture tutorials and even how to make concrete counters! As a lover of concrete it’s not surprise Jenise decided to make a DIY tombstone for Halloween and we just love how simple this is! Made with a baking tray and rapid set cement it looks much better than any store bought plastic version!

Book Page Pumpkin

Mandy from Sugar Bee Crafts created this cute and really different pumpkin decoration. Mandy lives in Kansas City and regularly blogs about DIY and homelife; you’ll find meal ideas and lovely décor inspiration on her site. The book page pumpkin stood out to us straight away, Mandy got the instructions from the Dollar Tree Value Seekers Club and did a great job of it! The use of the book pages give a nice, elegant, autumn feeling and it would serve as a great decoration all through the season as well as Halloween!

We hope you’ve found some inspiration for your own Halloween decorations! Be sure to leave us a comment and let us know what your favourite projects are!
